- ★ NAME: Jess
- ★ AGE: Early 20's (estimated between 21-22)
- ★ CANON POINT: s5, ep6
- ★ CANON INFORMATION: http://e4-misfits.wikia.com/wiki/Jess
Misfits is set in England, in modern day Earth. The only big difference between our reality and theirs is the fact that a big storm occurred and said storm caused a lot of people to develop super powers that are oddly related to their personality or occupation. The show is largely centered around activity within the community center, and the young offenders forced to do community service as a part of their probation. Jess is one of these young offenders, and she also was caught in the storm and has developed a power of her own.
★ PERSONALITY:
“You act all tough and sassy...that's an act.”
That's the best way to describe Jess, and it's really a shame that it comes from a psychopath because it's very insightful.
“She acts all tough, but she's not!”
If another character (albeit still a young offender that has skewed morality issues) says it, that makes two, and therefore it must be true.
Jess is someone that initially comes across a great deal more confident, tough, and sure of herself than she really is. She's sassy and fierce, and doesn't let anyone get the best of her if she can help it. She doesn't come across as someone that's out to make friends, and she most definitely doesn't really care if anyone likes her or not. If she gets close to people she can tolerate, fine, but she's not out to try and impress anyone or be anyone other than who she really is. She's not afraid to hit on a guy when she fancies him, and makes jokes toward him such as having community service for attacking a guy. She has no problem telling fellow delinquent Finn that she has no interest in the things he's telling her, and has no problem punching the guy she has a crush on because she feels he's been leading her on and deserves it (and of course, this is after she jumps to a conclusion about his sexuality). She's brash and can be aggressive, and isn't really ever shown feeling sorry for it. She's been hurt in the past and because of this, she's built up walls that she doesn't want to have knocked down in front of others. She prefers superficial friendships where she doesn't share too much personal info about her past, although her connections with the other young offenders in her life is getting her to open up more and reveal more about her past.
She opens up to Rudy and reveals in an emotionally tense conversation that she suffered from an eating disorder when she was younger, and was used for sex by her guy friend at the time. When she realized that he was only using her eating disorder as a way to get sex out of her, it broke her heart and that combined with the emotional toil from the eating disorder led to a suicide attempt. She clearly survived the attempt, and since then has promised herself she'd never let another person hurt her in the way her guy friend had. She's also noted that she's never slept with another person since this. She hasn't even kissed a guy over the past three years. But she still carries the emotional baggage around from this time of her life, and even is seen still keeping a picture of her with her guy friend in her purse. She still clings hold of the past and keeps her feelings about it private no matter how unhealthy she knows it is.
Her friendships with Finn, Rudy, and Curtis have led her to realizing that she can open up to people without sex attached (despite Finn's best attempts), and it's given her some positive self-confidence. It's also given her a headache in the fact that she's often stuck dealing with the various predicaments the others seem to get into on a weekly basis. She's had to really step up here lately and it's made her start to realize that there's issues out there other than her own personal demons, and although it hasn't necessarily softened her up it's made her more willing to be patient with people like Finn and Rudy. She's working on her trust issues with her new friends, and although she's always quick to judge them and insult them as needed, she talks to them when she's going through something and relies on them for help every now and then. She realizes that she doesn't have to necessarily take on everything by herself, which is something that she's still learning to rely on.
Jess has a very sharp wit and a dry sense of humor, and she doesn't think much of anything about snarking with anyone, even people she's just met. While she's not the comic relief on the show, she definitely finds her insults toward Rudy and Finn to be comical and is usually seen smirking or chortling at her jokes toward them. While she does insult her friends, it seems to be on a playful level more often than not. It's when the judgmental face is pulled out that she means serious business. Her level of patience is pretty short, and she's seen stomping off to hide in the bathroom more than once in canon. The words “well this is awkward, so I'm going to the toilet” have actually come out of her mouth. She has a short fuse and is pretty emotionally stunted, and doesn't want to deal with things that make her feel like she can't control them. Her relationship with Alex “from the bar” is complicated. She instantly was attracted to him, and while she tried to flirt with him and get him to notice her in a superficial manner, he rejected her and she instantly flew to insult him and storm off. She believes it when she's told by her friends that Alex might be gay, and she even outright accuses him of it. She really is shameless when it comes to hitting people with insults that hurt, in order to not break down and show genuine emotion or show that she's hurt in front of people that make her feel vulnerable.
She's entirely blunt and just says what's on her mind as she thinks it. She can hold her tongue in extreme cases, but most of the time she has no problem telling someone that she thinks their stepmother wants to fuck them, or that she thinks they're a disgrace to the entire human race and should be flogged. She freely curses, as do most all of the characters on the show. Her level of cursing isn't as bad as some of the others, but she doesn't censor herself or the things she wants to say, and doesn't expect anyone else to either. She doesn't mind being crude herself (although some of the things Rudy says offend her, go figure) and she doesn't really bat an eye when asking Finn if he imagines his father having sex with her, and if he imagines it being from behind. She can ask things like that with a totally straight face, while eating a lollypop, and just can casually bounce on to the next subject with no problem. She's able to crack up laughing when Finn confesses that he loves Harry Potter because he likes to guess at what point people think it's okay to want to shag Hermione.
Jess is also a very animated person that doesn't try to hide what she is feeling, despite often appearing she just doesn't give a damn about anything. When she's pissed, it clearly shows on her face. She doesn't even bother masking when she's disgusted with someone, and usually likes to follow up any disgusted expressions with a remark about just how nasty she thinks they are. Even when she's trying to save face by insulting others and storming off, the hurt or anger she's feeling clearly shows. This could tie into her power of x-ray vision where she's able to see through things, and her own emotions are so transparent despite the fact she tries to contain or mask them. Her powers also reference the fact that her biggest desire is for people to just be straight with her, and how she wants to see people for what they really are and not for the loads of bullshit that they feed her.
But despite the more negative things about her personality, and the fact she's doing community service, Jess wants to be good person. Deep down, she wants to do what's right by her own set of moral codes she's developed over the years. She's seen trying to help Finn break away from his girlfriend when she realized it was an unhealthy relationship for him to be in. She went behind Finn's back and asked someone who could take powers to steal a power from Finn's girlfriend, an action she believed would free him. This probably tied into her own insecurities and issues from the past, but she really did believe she was doing what was right. When Rudy and Finn get into antics, she's usually the voice of reason, and acts as a balancing force for the group. The most important thing about Jess is that despite her morals and whatever she thinks she's capable of doing, she's proven that she will do whatever it takes to protect herself and her friends. She just jumps right in and does what needs to be done. In her first episode, when she's locked in a freezer with Finn, she has no shame in peeing herself because she has to and also because she needs to stay warm. When Finn announces out loud that she's pissed herself, she just pulls a face that says “yeah, and so what?” and moves on. When one of Rudy's more sinister personalities emerge and attempts to kill her after creeping on her, she's able to suck it up and kill him with a pair of scissors and doesn't break down while doing so. She's stronger than she looks or anyone gives her credit for, which is one of her hidden strengths.
★ COURT ALLIANCE:
Unseelie:
I took the alignment quiz at the link provided in the application and received a score of Chaotic Neutral for Jess. After looking at both Seelie and Unseelie pages, I also feel that several of the mottos fit with Jess perfectly. She would definitely agree that change is good and constantly seeks out change in her life, and believes that honor is a lie and there should be passion before duty. She has a conversation with Finn in canon about honor being a lie, and she can't trust anyone that shows too much honor. She also is someone that definitely puts what she feels in the moment above what she thinks must be done.
Jess has done some really stupid things, and while she's in community service, her exact wrong doing isn't ever revealed. She's someone who is rough around the edges and despite wanting to do the right thing she ends up having to make choices that end with her doing the wrong thing. She kills a man in self-defense, and shows enormous regret for it in the moment, but never brings it back up again. She does suggest that a nun offer herself up as sacrifice in order to stop Horsemen from destroying the Earth, and stood by her choice of suggesting it because she felt that it was the nun's fault for using her power and unleashing the Horsemen in the first place. She never made the suggestion to be malicious, but won't back down on what she thinks or feels and has no upset at suggesting that someone give up their life because they caused the mess. While her suggestion may have seemed to be in the interest of the greater good, it is revealed that she did not want to end up dying or having to sacrifice herself. She can be hostile with others, particularly men, and doesn't seem to hesitate in doing what it takes to stay alive or get ahead. She's not a bad kid necessarily, she just gets involved in a lot of unfortunate things. She's definitely on the chaotic neutral side of things, and despite being able to argue that she could make sense on either side I feel there is enough canon evidence to push her in the direction of unseelie alliance.
★ ABILITIES: X-Ray Vision – Jess is able to see through things. Kind of boring but pretty useful. It's not said if her power has limitations (such as an inability to see through certain materials). When using her power, Jess' eyes turn a bright shade of glowing blue. Yeah, it's creepy.
